In 2198, one hundred and fifty years after the desperate wars that destroyed an overpopulated Earth, Man lives precariously on a hundred hastily-established colony worlds and in the seven giant Ships that once ferried men to the stars. Mia Havero's Ship is a small closed society. It tests its children by casting them out to live or die in a month of Trial in the hostile wilds of a colony world. Mia Havero's Trial is fast approaching and in the meantime she must learn not only the skills that will keep her alive but the deeper courage to face herself and her world. Published originally in 1968, Alexei Panshin's Nebula Award-winning classic has lost none of its relevance, with its keen exploration of societal stagnation and the resilience of youth.

Alexei Panshin: Rite of Passage

It left me there, the Compleat Young Girl, hell on wheels. I could build one-fifteenth of a log cabin, kill one-thirty-first of a tiger, kiss, do needlepoint, pass through an obstacle course, and come pretty close (in theory) to killing somebody with my bare hands. What did I have to worry about?

If I had the opportunity, I would make the proposal that no man should be killed except by somebody who knows him well enough for the act to have impact.
No death should be like nose blowing. Death is important enough that it should affect the person who causes it.

chapter 18

Noro P>!

It is easy now to see the irrelevance of the religious wars of the past, to see that capitalism in itself is not evil, to see that honor is most often a silly thing to kill a man for, to see that national patriotism should have meant nothing in the twenty-first century, to see that a correctly-arranged tie has very little to do with true social worth. It is harder to assess as critically the insanities of your own time, especially if you have accepted them unquestioningly for as long as you can remember, for as long as you have been alive.
If you never make the attempt, whatever else you are, you are not mature.

epilogue

Noro P>!

The very people you'd enjoy meeting are the ones who have the good taste to stay home and not bother you. I think it may be an unsolvable problem.

chapter 2

Noro P>!

I sometimes think that parents enjoy putting their children in uncomfortable situations, maybe as a way of getting back without admitting it.

chapter 4

Noro P>!

If I'd known all this was to come out of my one simple, honestly prejudiced remark, I would never have opened my mouth.
Maybe there is a lesson in that, but if there is, I've never learned it; I still have an unbecoming tendency to open my mouth and get myself in trouble.

chapter 7

Noro P>!

„It's an adventure,” Jimmy said. „Adventures are supposed to have an element of danger, be fraught with peril and all that.”

chapter 9

Noro P>!

I'm not saying I don't believe in heroes – I'm just saying that they are either parasites or they spend the bulk of their time in making their little adventures possible, not in enjoying them.

chapter 10

Noro P>!

There is nothing like hunting a tiger almost bare-handed to give you a feeling of real confidence in yourself. If you manage to survive the experience.
