Publisher Harold Hart approached Neill to write about his controversial school, & together compiled this book from Neill's other works, which became the number one nonfiction bestseller in the USA. The effect of the book helped to promulgate Neill's educational theories, as well as reviving the flagging attendance at the long-running experimental school that he had founded in 1921 in Germany in conjunction with the Neue Schule, & then moved to England in 1923.

Free children are not easily influenced; the absence of fear accounts for this phenomenon. Indeed, the absence of fear is the finest thing that can happen to a child.

The idea of Summerhill

You cannot make children learn music or anything else without to some degree converting them into will-less adults. You fashion them into accepters of the status quo – a good thing for a society that needs obedient sitters at dreary desks, standers in shops, mechanical catchers of the 8:30 suburban train – a society, in short, that is carried on the shabby shoulders of the scared little man – the scared-to-death conformist.

In the home, the child is always being taught. In almost every home, there is always at least one un-grownup grownup who rushes to show Tommy how his engine works. There is always someone to lift the baby up on a chair when baby wants to examine something on the wall. Every time we show Tommy how his engine works we are stealing from that child the joy of life – the joy of discovery – the joy of overcoming an obstacle. Worse! We make that child come to believe that he is inferior, and must depend on help.

Summerhill education vs. standard education

The future of Summerhill itself may be of little import. But the future of the Summerhill idea is of the greatest importance to humanity. New generations must be given the chance to grow in freedom. The bestowal of freedom is the bestowal of love. And only love can save the world.

The nursery training is very like the kennel training; the whippes child, like the whipped puppy, grows into an obedient, inferior adult. And as we train our dogs to suit our own purposes, so we train our children. In that kennel, the nursery, the human dogs must be clean; they must not bark too much; they must obey the whistle; they must feed when we think it convenient for them to feed.
I saw a hundred thousand obedient, fawing dogs wag their tails in the Templehof, Berlin, when in 1935, the great trainer Hitler whistled his commands.

The unfree child

People are always saying to me, 'But how will your free children ever adapt themselves to the drudgery of life?' I hope that these free children will be pioneers in abolishing the drudgery of life.

The free child

Freedom is necessary for the child because only under freedom can he grow in his natural way – the good way.

I personally have nothing against the man who believes in a God – no matter what God. What I object to is the man who claims that his God is the authority for his imposing restrictions on human growth and hapiness. The battle is not between the believers in theology and nonbelievers in theology; it is between believers in human freedom and believers in the suppression of human freedom.

The crowd cannot think, it can only feel.

The child is forced to swallow the pill, but the pill is given a sugar coating. Parents and teachers have confused true nonauthoritarian education with education by means of persuasion and hidden coercion. Progressive education has been thus debased. It has failed to become what it was intended to be and has never developed as it was meant to.
