A. Meredith Walters: Chasing the Tide

Life was tangled and twisted. It was vicious and violent. It could crush you in its merciless grip before you ever had a chance to live. And he was my safety in the nightmare.

Our history was horrible and beautiful and complicated. It was brutal and life changing. We shared a love that had blossomed under the most impossible of circumstances. It was rough. It was imperfect. It was ours.

“You’re home,” Flynn said, (…) His words struck me with a resonance that I felt deep in my bones.
Home.
No word had ever sounded so foreign to my ears yet felt so right in my heart.
Home.
Because I knew that I had finally, after all this time, after the years of searching, found a home, a place to belong, in the waiting arms of the boy who had once, long ago, promised me his friendship. And who now promised me forever.

Flynn had taught me that living was more than breathing. And that earning and deserving love were battles worth fighting.

I looked at Flynn now and saw the boy who had once smiled at me shyly, telling me that I was pretty and that he wanted to draw me.
I thought of him holding out a Black-eyed Susan that night in his yard under the moon, having planted them because they had been my favorite.
He painted the living room yellow because I had mentioned once that I had thought it would look nice.
And now, just minutes ago, he had finally told me that he loved me.
He was banana bread and holding hands. He was soft smiles and warm touches. He was whispered words and solemn declarations.
He was love.
He was home.
He was forever.

Every story has a beginning. Flynn was mine. He was the journey in between… He was my beginning. My end. My home. My happily ever after.

I felt as though Flynn and I were forever chasing the tide. Hoping that just this once, we’d finally be able to catch it. That we could hold it in our hands and breathe a sigh of relief because all the battles, all the wars, were over. That we could finally be content in this … our happily ever after.

I had been hateful and bitter. And Flynn had only given me unconditional friendship and acceptance. He took my resentment and my viciousness and he returned it with his love. He had saved me. He had empowered me. He had shown me the person that I wanted to be.

His mouth opened beneath mine without hesitation and within seconds we were kissing as though we would never have the chance to again. As though it had been a thousand years since we had seen each other. As though he were my air and I was his beating heart. Kissing Flynn was an experience unlike anything. No two kisses were ever the same. Some were soft and tentative. Others were hungry and almost violent. But this kiss was special. It was passionate and tender and uncontrollable. It made me want to cry. It made me want to laugh. It made me want to hang on and never let go.
