“So are the fae planning on taking over the world?” I asked Zee.
He laughed so hard, he couldn’t speak for a few minutes. “The short answer is yes,” he told me cheerfully.
Asil set aside his book and quit pretending he was not interested.
“But?” I said, and he laughed again.
“Liebchen,” he said. “If they could all point their swords in the same direction for more than ten seconds, they just might manage something scary.[…]"

„Samuel told me you are going to be at a trial for the vampire.”
„He called you,” I said, outraged. „What did he do? Ask you to call him when I got here safely?”
Zee smiled at me for the first time and got out his cell phone. With oil-stained fingers he punched in my number. „She's here,” he said. „Made it fine.”
He hung up without waiting for a reply and widened his smile further as he dialed another number. I knew that one, too. But in case I'd missed it, he used names. „Hello, Adam,” he said. „She's here.” He listened for a moment; I did too, but he must have had the volume turned down low because all I could hear was the rumble of a male voice. Zee's smile turned into a malevolent grin. He looked at me and said, „Adam wants to know what took you so long?”
I started to roll my eyes, but it made the sore half of my face hurt worse so I stopped. „Tell him I had wild, passionate sex with a complete stranger.”

Zee relaxed and made a quick movement that my eyes didn’t quite follow, but after which his sword was gone. “I warned him not to come back,” said Zee, and he glanced at Sherwood. “I’ve seen you fight before. What did you say your name was?”
Sherwood gave him a half smile. “Sherwood Post.”
Zee blinked at him. “That sounds like a fence built by Robin Hood.”
“Don’t ever forget your name when Bran is around,” I told Zee. “I figure Sherwood got away lightly. Just think if Bran had been reading Moby-Dick and The Old Man and the Sea instead. Sherwood could have been Herman Hemingway.”
“Or what if he had been reading Louis L’Amour?” asked Mary Jo. “Sherwood L’Amour would have doomed you to stripper jokes for the rest of your life.”

Reluctantly, I pulled out my necklace and showed it to them.
Samuel frowned. The little figure was stylized; I suppose he couldn’t tell what it was at first.
“A dog?” asked Zee, staring at my necklace.
“A lamb,” I said defensively, tucking it safely back under my shirt. “Because one of Christ’s names is ‘The Lamb of God.’ ”
Samuel’s shoulders shook slightly. “I can see it now, Mercy holding a roomful of vampires at bay with her glowing silver sheep.”
I gave his shoulder a hard push, aware of the heat climbing up my cheeks, but it didn’t help. He sang in a soft taunting voice, “Mercy had a little lamb . . .”

“That is one I thought would never change,” said Asil thoughtfully.
“He loved my mother,” Tad told him. “Love is more powerful than anything, even an old grumpy fae who knows how to hate.”
Asil gave Tad a thoughtful look. “Indeed?” And then he looked back at the mirror. “Love is both useful and powerful—but seldom convenient.”
“I don’t know about that,” Adam said. “I’ve found it pretty convenient.”
“That’s not what you told me,” I corrected him, and he laughed.

“Joe Old Coyote was tough,” Adam told Jesse, putting an arm around my shoulders. “He hunted vampires, and he took on Mercy’s mom. Of the two, I know what I’m more scared of.”
That made me laugh. “My mom isn’t that bad.”
Adam gave me a look.
I bit my lip, then gave up and laughed again. “Okay, okay. She is. Worse. I’d rather face vampires any day than my mother.”
“I found her charming,” said Zee.

“I have a few scores to settle, and I take too much pleasure in the planning to hurry. I’m swamped.”
“‘I’ve got my country’s five hundredth anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it,’”I murmured very quietly. I wasn’t sure that Zee was quoting the movie, but he sounded so much like Prince Humperdinck, I couldn’t help myself. Either Adam was the only one who heard me, or no one else appreciated The Princess Bride.
