The Upper Level demon winked an amber-colored eye and then turned. Casting one last lingering look inside the ice-cream’ shop, he strolled away, humming under his breath. The melody poked around at my memory.
"' Paradise City’?” I said dumbly, stepping to stand beside Dez. “He’s humming a Guns N’ Roses song?”

“So we need to work together,” Roth stated.
Maddox laughed harshly. “Work with demons. Are you on crack?”
“Like I’ve said before, the Boss frowns on drug use while on the job.”

Chapter 5

“You can call me Roth.”
“Roth as in the retirement account?” asked Sam. “Is that what you’re named after?”
Dark brows inched up Roth’s forehead as he stared at Sam.
“Sorry.” Stacey sighed. “Sam has absolutely no social skills. I should’ve warned you.”
Sam’s eyes narrowed on Stacey. “What? That’s what retirement accounts are called—Roth IRAs. How can you not know that?”
“I’m in high school. Why would I care about retirement? Besides, who would know that but you?” Stacey shot back as she picked up a plastic fork, waving it in his face. “Next you’re going to wow us with your knowledge of plastic utensils and how they were created.”
“I’m sorry if your lack of knowledge makes you uncomfortable.” Sam knocked the fork away, grinning. “It must be hard living with that tiny brain of yours.”

“But there is so much you don’t know or understand,” he said, tilting his head so that his words brushed the lobe of my ear, sending a shiver down my neck. “So don’t claim to know what I really want or what I would do to protect it.”

Chapter 25

“What about Roth?” she asked. “I mean, you just said Crown Prince of…of Hell?”
“Totally evil,” Zayne threw out.
I sighed. “He’s not totally evil. He’s here doing something really important.”

Chapter 27

“Roth,” I said, gripping the edge of the table. “Knock it off.”
“He started it.”
I gaped. “What? Are you guys two years old?”

Roth toyed with the lid to his hot chocolate. For some reason the idea of a demon—the Crown Prince of Hell—drinking hot chocolate brought a wry grin to my lips.

„Don't come near me.”
„Or what? Remember how far you got fighting the Seeker last night? You won't even get that far with me.”
