“I’m not tragic.”
Kaldar held up his hand. “Spare me. Some children are born wearing a silk shirt; you were born wrapped in melancholy. When they slapped you to make you cry, you just sighed heavily and a single tear rolled from your eye.” He dragged his finger from the corner of his left eye to his cheek. “Your first words were probably ‘woe is me.’”
“My first words were ‘Kaldar, shut up!’ because you talked too much."
Say, Charlotte, have you seen Richard? A brooding fellow about as tall as me, but much uglier and incapable of humor?”
“Uglier?”
“Well, perhaps not uglier per se, but definitely more melancholy. His trouble is that he thinks too much. It keeps him from enjoying life. Have you
seen him?”
“He’s inside cooking.”
“Cooking? He hates to cook.”
Kaldar stepped over the threshold and ducked left. A knife sprouted from the doorframe where his head had been a moment ago. Kaldar flicked his fingers at the blade. “See? Incapable of humor.”
“What are you talking about?” Richard raised his eyebrows. “I thought the look on your face was bloody hilarious.”
“Who are you, and what have you done with my brother?”

William pretended to look around.
“What are you looking for?” Cerise asked.
“The one horse that all of you share.”
She snickered like a kid. William preened. She thought he was funny.
Richard was frowning.
“He’s implying this is a one-horse town,” Cerise told him.
Richard raised his eyes to the sky briefly.
“Are you appealing to your grandparents as well?” William asked.
Richard sighed. “To my dead father, actually. He sees it fit to put me through all sorts of foolishness lately.”
Richard drew back. He opened his mouth, obviously struggling.
“A changeling,” he finally managed.
She nodded.
“What …”
“A wolf.”
Richard cleared his throat. “Well.”
She waited for him.
“It could be worse,” he said finally. “Efrenia married an arsonist. Jake’s wife is a kleptomaniac. I suppose, a psychopathic spree killer isn’t that odd of a choice, considering. We’ll just have to work around it. Gods know, we’ve had practice. He’s certainly good in a fight.”
