“For Saints’ sake, let us help you,” said Nina.
Kaz gripped the end of a bandage in his teeth and tore off a piece. “I don’t need your help. Keep working with Colm.”
“What is wrong with him?” Nina grumbled as they went back to the sitting room to drill Colm on his cover story. “Same thing that’s always wrong with him,” said Jesper. “He’s Kaz Brekker.”

He gave Nina a nudge with his cane. Without opening her eyes, she tried to bat it away. “Rise and shine.”
“Go ’way,” she said, burying her head in Matthias’ chest.
“Let’s go, Zenik. The dead will wait, but I won’t.”

He turned to Nina and said in Fjerdan, „Do not let them cow you. You are not the girl you were. You are not just a soldier to command.”
„So why do I feel like finding a corner to sob in?”
„This is a round room. There are no corners.”

„Perjury? How long will you serve for that, Zenik?”
„Two months,” she said quietly.
„Two months?” Now he did laugh, long and hard. His body twitched with it, as if it were poison constricting his muscles.
The others watched him with some concern.
„Just how crazy is he?” asked Jesper, fingers drumming on the pearl handles of his revolvers.
Brekker shrugged. „He's not what I'd call reliable, but he's all we've got.”

Wylan slapped his hand against the explosive and dove away, careening into Matthias and Jesper as they all covered their ears.
Nothing happened.
„Are you kidding me?” said Jesper.
Boom. The slab exploded. Ice and bits of rock rained down over their heads.
Wylan was covered in dust and wearing a slightly dazed, deliriously happy expression. Nina started to laugh. „Try to look like you knew it would work.”

Matthias smiled broadly and doomed in a singsong voice, „Hello, little friend!”
The woman went from wary to baffled. Nina decided to call it an improvement.

– Gyakoroljunk?
– Anyám, apám, lakbért fizess! – kántálta Nyina éneklő hangos.
Matthias döbbent szemmel meredt rá.
– Lehetséges, hogy lázad van?

Szerette volna megmondani neki, hogy az ember úgy is tud szeretni valamit, ha tisztán látja és ismeri a hiányosságait. Legalábbis reménykedett benne, hogy így igaz, máskülönben semminek nincs semmi értelme.

– Kész szerencse, hogy ez az egész a pénzünkről szól, nem pedig Inej megmentéséről. Nem, még csak távolról sem.
– Ha téged nem érdekel a pénz, Nyina drágám, illesd másik nevén a célunkat!
– Kruge? Dohány? Kaz egyetlen igaz szerelme?
– Szabadság, biztonság, bosszú.
– Ezekre nem lehet árat tűzni.
