“I believe Smokescreen asked you a question.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” said Nova. “I was busy daydreaming about your funerals.”

“What exactly are we looking for?”
“Villains,” Oscar said. “Doing villainous things.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Szelén>!

“You know, I’m not sure you picked the right alias. Insomnia is too passive. I vote we change it to Velociraptor.”
Ruby laughed. “Relatively small, but surprisingly ferocious?”
“Exactly. All in favor?”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

A bomb maker, a beekeeper, a poison distiller … and her.
It sounded like the start of a bad joke.

“So…,” said Oscar, nodding at the nearest chair, “are you going to take that?”
Adrian shook his head. “Go for it.”
“I don’t need it,” said Oscar, with a casual, one-shouldered shrug. “You’re the head honcho here. If you want it—”
“Sit down, Oscar.”
Oscar scowled, and Nova could feel him bristling at Adrian’s abruptness. It was unlike Adrian, and suggested that he, too, was more nervous than he was trying to let show.
With a sigh, Adrian gestured at the chair. “I need you to play bad cop. The bad cop would take the chair, right?”
[…] “Oh yeah,” he said, with a pleased nod. “Bad cop is ready.”
“Which of us is good cop?” said Ruby, glancing at Adrian and Nova in turn.
[…]
“I’m good cop,” said Adrian. He glanced at Nova. “You’re the observer. If you have something to say or add, jump in, but otherwise, I want you focused on any signs he might be lying … or telling the truth.”
“So who am I?” said Ruby.
Adrian grinned. “You’re the muscle.”
Ruby beamed, hopping excitedly from foot to foot as she loosened the wire on her wrist.
“Hold on,” said Oscar, glancing over his shoulder. “Maybe I wanted to be the muscle.”

“Are they Renegades?”
[…]
“We sure are,” said Nova, her voice run through with assertive pride. “Renegades. All of us. Bold, valiant, and… um…”
“Just,” whispered Ruby.
Nova nodded. “That’s the one.”

Nova shut her eyes and thought, if she were a villain worthy of the name, she would be with them now. Celebrating, or mourning.
And if she were a hero, she would be hurrying to help any Renegades who might be trapped and hurt beneath the rubble.
Instead, she listened to the sounds of a city in distress, and did nothing.

“What do you propose?” said Adrian, slipping his free hand into his pocket as they meandered past a series of food vendors. “Should we open a hero-training course, open to non-prodigies? Teach them ethics and martial arts and… I don’t know. Bravery. Do you think you can teach someone to be brave?”
Nova felt the side of her mouth lift, just a little, in some relief that he hadn’t outright refuted her argument against heroes. “A hero-training course would be a start, but it would only go so far. As long as there are superheroes, there will be people who rely on them far too much. I think humanity would be better off if there were no… no prodigies at all.”

“Your days of villainy are over, Nightmare.”
She scoffed. “You sound like you’ve read too many comics.”
“You sound like you think that’s a bad thing,” he retorted.

Chapter Two

Noctua P>!

“Probably the best thing that ever happened to me, though, right? Just think—if I’d been faster, I might have gotten out of that apartment building just fine, and I’d be stuck with all the other spry, non-prodigy suckers out there.”
“Right,” said Nova. “Not dying of carbon monoxide poisoning when you were five years old would have been awful.”
“See?” Oscar looked pointedly at Adrian. “She gets it.”
