Inside was a DVD of Finding Nemo. Emily looked up, confused.
“Ellen DeGeneres is the voice of the funny fish,” Emily’s mother explained in a slightly uh-duh voice. “We thought you might like her.” Emily suddenly got it. Ellen DeGeneres was a fish—a lesbian swimmer, just like Emily.

“Speaking of which, there’s a girl at church you should meet.” Mrs. Fields paused from untangling two ornaments made out of Popsicle sticks. “She leads one of the youth groups. I’ve told her all about you. She has very short hair,” Mrs. Fields added meaningfully.
It was amusing how, according to Emily’s mother, girls with short hair must be gay.

This was so classic: Mrs. Fields was always making decisions for Emily without actually asking her first. Like how she just assumed she’d be on the swim team year after year. Or how she bought Emily jeans from the Gap even though Gap jeans hadn’t fit her properly for years. Or how she made reservations at a Broadway-themed restaurant for Emily’s birthday even though Emily hadn’t liked the restaurant since she was nine years old. Sometimes, Emily thought her mother preferred Emily when she was nine—obedient, sweet, no mind of her own.

Emily had always wanted Mrs. Fields to be that kind of mom, but Mrs. Fields saw spas as frivolous indulgences. She’d even balked at her daughters getting their hair professionally done for school dances, insisting that they could do it themselves with enough bobby pins, flat irons, and hair spray.

I couldn’t bear the idea that it could have been you instead. Your dad and I are just so grateful that you’re here. I just wanted to make sure you knew that.”
Emily moved from the counter to the seat next to her mother and placed her hand lightly on her wrist. “I don’t need a ton of gifts to understand that.”
