Malik chuckled and looked over the walls of the training room. “Most of these weapons were his, you know.”
I assumed he meant Ethan. “I didn’t,” I said, following his gaze. The paneled walls were periodically decorated with antique weapons: pikes, shields, swords, and the like.
“They are symbols of his victories. Of the battles he won and lost. Not always perfectly. Not always with rigorous technique. But always with heart.”
He looked back at me. “There are few things in the world that he loves more than this House, Merit. Possibly only one.”
Damien, thank God, had been busy.
He’d already piled food on the dining room table – bowls of pasta and sauce, freshly grated Parmesan, steaming meatballs, and crusty bread for dipping.
I stared at the table and sighed with sensual approval.
„You’d better propose to her quickly, Sullivan,” Gabriel warned, taking a seat at the table. „Before she proposes to Damien or the food.”
There was nothing equivocal in his gaze, in the steadiness of his green eyes.
„He was my nightmare, Merit. You are my miracle. He will not touch you again. Yes?”

I like to think it was a group effort," Ethan said. „All of us working together to shape our lump of girl into a Sentinel.”
„I like to think I'm more than the sum of my training.”
„You are,” Luc said. „There's at least some hot beef or deep dish in there.”
„I am also more than Chicago foodstuffs.”
Ethan grinned at Luc. „Pumas? Diet Coke? Smart-assery?”
Luc snapped his fingers, pointed at Ethan. „Yes. And, like, three percent medieval literature.”
„You're both hilarious. Really and truly. Comedy geniuses.”

He joined us on the couch, deposited a hot dog on a dinner plate of fine platinum-banded china. Frowning, he began sawing at it with a knife and fork, then carefully ate a chunk.
„Sullivan, just pick it up.”
He glanced at me, spearing a chunk of hot dog with his fork. „My way is more genteel.”
I took another gigantic bite, and told him between chews, „Your way is more tight ass.”
„Your respect for me, Sentinel, is astounding.”
I grinned at him. „I'd respect you more if you took a bite of that hot dog.”
„You don't respect me any.”
Not entirely true, but I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of a correction. „Like I said, I'd respect you more. More than none.”
I smiled and turned back to Mallory and Catcher, who, heads cocked, stared at both of us. „What?”
„Nothing,” they simultaneously said."

I wanted what most people wanted – love, companionship.
I wanted someone to touch. I wanted someone to touch me back.
I wanted someone to laugh with, someone who would laugh with me, laugh at me.
I wanted someone who looked and saw me. Not my power, not my position.
I wanted someone to say my name. To call out, „Merit,” when it was time to go, or when we arrived. Someone who wanted to say to someone else, with pride, „I'm here with her. With Merit.”
I wanted all those things. Indivisibly."

I don't stop wanting you. Not since the moment I walked into this House all those months ago."
