“I know,” I said even as my throat corded up.

Luca’s eyes shot open, fierce and blazing with emotion. “But I don’t care because loving you is the only pure thing in my life.”

“Not when you’ve lost your fucking mind.”

“Fuck you.”

“I hate this life. I hate the mafia. Sometimes I wished there was a way to escape.”
Luca’s face became still. “From me?”
“No,” I said, surprising myself. “From this world. Have you never wanted to live a normal life?”
“No. This is who I am, who I was born to be, Aria. It’s the only life I know, the only life I want. For me to confirm to a normal life would be like an eagle in a small cage in a zoo.” He paused. “Your marriage to me shackles you to the mafia. Blood and death will be your life as long as I live.”
“Then so be it. I’ll go where you go no matter how dark the path.”

“Of course you don’t understand, because you never loved anyone more than your own life. You can’t possibly understand how it is to feel your own heart breaking at the thought of the person you love getting hurt. I would die for the people I love.”
His eyes were hard and cold as he stood. “You are right. I don’t understand.”

“Wow. Doesn’t she look amazing?”

That question was directed at Luca and led to an awkward pause in which the tension skyrocketed. Dante wrapped his arm around my waist, his cold eyes on Luca, who took Aria’s hand, kissed it and said in a low voice. “I have only eyes for you.”

“Okay, I’m taking her to Chicago. But I’m not leaving without her, no matter what Scuderi says. She’s mine.”
“Alright, but I doubt there will be any problems. And believe me, I have no interest in letting Gianna getting hurt by her father. Aria loves her sister, and I want Aria to be happy, so I won’t let Scuderi kill or hurt her. We will bring her back to New York with us, even as your wife if that’s really what you want.”
“You’ll go against Scuderi if he disagrees for some reason.”
“I will. For you and for Aria.”
“Swear it.”
Luca sighed again. “I swear it. You and Aria are going to be the death of me.”

„How did you spend your last Sylvester?”
Matteo rubbed the back of his head, glancing at Luca, who sent him a warning look. I took another gulp of the champagne.
„I assume that means women were involved.”
„A few, yeah” Matteo said with a wink.
„At the same time?”
„Matteo was too drunk to remember,” Luca said firmly, and I rolled my eyes at him but decided to let it drop.

“What are you doing?” I whispered nervously.

“I’m not going to take you if that’s what you’re worried about. I can wait a few more days. I’ve waited three years after all.”
