“I eavesdropped.”

“If you’re reading my mind, you know everything I know,” I said.
“I stopped reading your mind five seconds after you entered the building. That’s when you started thinking about my son naked.”
I almost choked on my pancake.

At a nod from Nero, Claudia waved her hand in front of Ivy, Drake, and Alec. Magic rippled across their bodies, snapping like a rubber band. And then there were four Claudias in front of me.
I blinked. “Amazing. You all look just like her.”
One of the Claudias looked down at her chest and smirked. “We really do.” That was definitely Alec.
“Morrows, what did I say about you ogling my breasts?” the real Claudia warned him.
Alec’s smirk persisted. “They are my breasts now.”
“I have to leave now for Los Angeles,” he told me.
“I’ll stay here tonight, then go back to New York.” I paused. “Will I ever see you
again?”
“Of course. I made you a promise.” He leaned in and kissed me softly. “And I never go back on my word.”
“You recited that passage perfectly,” Captain Somerset said.
“Thank you.”
“But you neglected to include the related passage in section twenty-six,” she continued, her voice a soft whisper. “Which does, in fact, state that a mentor may take on only one student in the Elemental Trials.”
“Yes, it does,” I agreed. “But Kendra Fireswift doesn’t know that. You have to always know the rules better than your nemesis, right?”
“Ok, let’s see what you’ve got, angel.” Alec blew me a kiss.
I flipped my cards. His smile melted when he saw my angel and Sea Dragon.
“It can’t be.”
“And yet it is,” I said cheerfully, claiming the pile of chips that I’d just won.
“You lost every round before this. How can you win?” Alec demanded as I dealt out our new cards.
“It’s not about the battles,” I told him. “It’s about winning the war.”
“The Sea King is definitely worried about something. Something he doesn’t want the other elemental clans to find out about.”
“How do you know?” he asked.
I folded my arms across my chest and smiled. “A magician never reveals her secrets.”
He stared at me for a moment, then declared, “You bugged his office, didn’t you?”
My smile turned upside down. “How did you know?”
“I know you better than you think.”
“You j-joined the Legion.”
“Yep.”
“I’ve h-heard scary things about the L-Legion.”
“Those stories are exaggerations,” I said, which was only partially true.
I’d heard all the stories too. At least half of them were pretty close to reality. In the case of the other half, reality was much worse than the rumors.
His magic hit my mind again, pushing harder. I held on.
He frowned. “Stop fighting me. Tell me your secrets.”
“You don’t want to know.”
“I do,” he said, his magic tightening its grip.
I could barely see from the excruciating pain. “Ok.” I swallowed hard. “But don’t come crying to me if you don’t like it.”
“I am a god. If I don’t like what you have to say, I won’t cry. I will kill you.”
I cringed. “You see, that’s not really convincing me to tell you anything.”
