Jacen reached out and tousled his brother's hair. „Look, one thing, no matter what I think about what we did at Dantooine, I was proud to have you at my side. I don't know what I'll be in the future, Anakin, but I know you'll be a great Jedi Knight. I have confidence that you will succeed, no matter what life throws at you.”
Anakin sharpened his eyes. „Are you really Jacen, or some Yuuzhan Vong in an ooglith masquer?”
Jacen threw an arm around his little brother's shoulders. „For now, I'm Jacen Solo.” What I will be in the future, however, is anyone's guess.

„If you show us to the holoscreens, we'll get started.”
Tris frowned. „Holoscreens? There are no holoscreens here.”
„Then how do we get at the data?”
„I'll show you.” The librarian led them across the floor of the giant chamber, along a path between two long shelves. Jacen idly studied the contents of the shelves as he walked, wondering what they were. They looked like bricks of some kind, and he wondered if they were some sort of data storage device. A high-security installation such as this one would, he assumed, have a highly sophisticated means of keeping its data safe. Perhaps the bricks had to be fed by hand into some kind of reader, which would then display its contents. Each of the memory bricks could hold vast amounts of data, safely sealed away.
Tris turned right at the end of the shelves and took them down to another aisle. „Here are the exploration notes for the world you visited last, Munlali Mafir, translated into Basic for permanent record.” She reached up to the cop shelf and selected one of the bricks. „Everything here is meticulously cataloged. It may take you a while to get the hang of our system, but I am here to assist you in that task.” She handed the brick to Mara, who hefted it uncertainly, then gave it to Jacen. It was heavier than he had expected, and there were no obvious jack-in ports. The front and back were made of the same material as one side of the thing-a deep red material, with gold writing in Basic. The other three sides were curiously rough and soft.
Seeing his puzzlement, Tris took it back from him and opened it. The top folded back like the lid of a box, only the interior wasn't empty. It was full all the way through. Full of text.
Only then did Jacen understand. He felt like an idiot for not getting it sooner. But judging by the gasp of surprise from Danni, he knew he wasn't the only one.
Not a brick. The object in Tris's hand was a book.
„You're kidding,” Mara said, her eyebrows rising.
It was Tris's turn to look puzzled. „The Chiss have always stored sensitive information in this fashion. It is safe, secure, and permanent. We have lost too much data in ice storms to trust other, more complicated forms of storage.”
„But how are we going to find anything?” Danni asked. „We can't do keyword searches through… this!”

„As well as our gift for getting captured in the first place,” Han said.

„It's all right, Danni,” Jacen reassured her. „You're safe now.”
Her gaze fell upon the Ferroans standing around her, some with their weapons held loosely at their sides.
„This would be the Solo definition of 'safe,' I'm taking it?”

Tenel Ka finally turned to look at him. „What about the will of the Force, Jacen? Why not trust it?”
The reference to the Jedi's new understanding of the Force made Jacen think of Vergere—the lost Master who had opened their eyes to so much of that new understanding—and he smiled at the first truth she had taught him: Everything I tell you is a lie.
To Tenel Ka, he said, „Should I trust a river because it wants to run downhill?”
Tenel Ka frowned. „I am the one who asks the questions on Hapes, Jedi Solo.”
Jacen chuckled. „Okay. The Force isn't a deity, Tenel Ka. It's not self-conscious, and it isn't capable of caring what happens to us. It's a flow. Its only will is to remove that which blocks it. When we facilitate that flow, when we allow it to run through us to others, we're in harmony. We're using the light side.”
„And the dark side?”
„Is when we block that flow and turn it to our own ends,” Jacen said. „We keep it from others. And when we release it too quickly, we turn it from a nurturing stream into a destructive flood.”
„Didn't Vergere teach that our intentions make an act dark or light?” Tenel Ka asked.
„She did,” Jacen admitted. „And she was telling the truth, from a certain point of view. If you have good intentions, you tend to let the Force flow through you. If not, you tend to bottle it up inside, and it starts eating away at your good looks.”
Tenel Ka looked at him from the corner of one eye. „I prefer my truths to remain true from all points of view.”
„Sorry,” Jacen said. „The Force is too big.”
„And this is what you learned in the five years you were gone?”
„The core of it, yes.”
Tenel Ka studied the ground for a moment, then looked back at him. „It took five years to learn that?”
„There was a lot of travel time,” Jacen said.

„Do you need navigation data to the Colony gateway?”
„That won't be necessary,” Gray responded. „We have a course to the Lizil nest, and your son assured us that someone would be waiting—”
„Our son?” Leia interrupted.
„Yes.” Gray sounded confused. „The Queen Mother's new consort. He was the one who, uh, convinced her to intervene.”
A loud smack sounded from the pilot's seat. Leia glanced over to find Han holding his palm to his brow.
„You think you know him,” Han said, shaking his head. „And then he tries to start a war.”

The report wasn't very kind about Uncle Han, either. A middle-aged man Ben didn't recognize was telling the reporter what he thought. „So he calls himself a Corellian. But forget that Bloodstripe on his uniform pants—it might as well be a big yellow streak down his back, because Han Solo is just a Galactic Alliance puppet. He's betrayed Corellia by sitting on his backside doing whatever his Alliance buddies tell him to. And his son's just the same.”
Jacen seemed embarrassed. Maybe he was more upset for his dad. Ben would have been.
„You should use an earpiece to listen to those privately,” said Jacen.
„But you're famous.” Ben offered him the holozine. „Want to see?”
Jacen raised one eyebrow and seemed more worried about his meeting with Chief Omas. „Fine, but I could do without Thrackan Sal-Solo using me to humiliate my father in front of Corellia. You realize he gave all this information to the media, don't you?”
„Yeah, of course I do. But if we're not ashamed of it, why does it matter? We did the right thing for the Galactic Alliance. Centerpoint Station was a threat to everyone.”
Jacen turned his head very slowly with that half smile that Ben had learned meant he was impressed. „But a lot of worlds are taking Corellia's side now. So do you think those stories do any harm or not?”
Ben could always spot a test now. He knew he had to say what he believed: there was no point trying to be too clever. He wanted to learn from Jacen so badly that it burned him up. „Some worlds will always go against the Alliance anyway. So we might as well let the people on our side know we're taking action. Makes them feel safer.”
Jacen nodded approvingly and Ben felt a little Force-touch somewhere in his mind, as if Jacen were patting him on the head. „That's very perceptive. I think you're right.”

Jacen shook his head. „Emotion weakens you.”
„Yet anger, an emotion, gives you strength. Emotion doesn't weaken you, Jacen. It scares you. You specifically.”
