I swung the door open a moment before Derek walked through it.
“I heard the conversation. I’m coming,” he said.
Ascanio rolled his eyes. “This will be fun.”
Derek parked himself in the doorway. “You need backup.”
“She has backup.”
“Yes, but someone will have to carry the Prince of Hyenas if he accidentally
stabs his pinkie toe, and she isn’t a shapeshifter.”
“Fine.” I headed for my vehicle.
Behind me Ascanio snorted. “Idiot wolf.”
“Spoiled bouda brat.”
“Bigot.”
“Crybaby.”
“Shit for brains.”
“Momma’s boy.”
Universe, grant me patience.

“We’re going to Blue Ribbon Stables,” I said. “It’s the closest place to rent a horse.”
“Why?” Desandra asked.
“Because I can’t keep up with you on foot,” I said.
“And she runs like a rhino,” Derek added. “You can hear her a mile away.”
Traitor. “I thought you had my back?”
“I do,” Derek said. “The rhino running is nice. Makes it easy to keep track of you. If I ever lose you, I just have to listen and there you are.”
“Your way of doing things isn’t working. Time for a new strategy. The only difference between you and Derek is discipline and training. Either you can work on both, or you can keep thinking with your balls. It’s your choice. Say ‘pop.’ ”
“Pop?”
“That was the sound of me pulling your head out of your ass. If you stick it back up there again, there is nothing I can do about it. This is the only lecture you’ll ever get from me.”
I walked up to Curran. “Fifteen seconds.”
His eyes shone. “I remember. Try not to die.”
“I’ll survive just so I can kill you.”
“See you in the morning, then.”
I moved aside. Behind me Derek had a wide smile plastered on his face.
“Are you babysitting me for the fight?”
He nodded, his smile even wider.
Marvelous.
“Kate makes good sausage,” Jim said.
Six pairs of eyes stared at me. Thank you, Mr. Wonderful. Just what I needed.
“Oh yeah.” Andrea snapped her fingers. “The links? The ones we had the beginning of the month? I didn’t know you made those. I thought they were bought. They were so good.” Her smile was positively cherubic. Of all the times not to be able to shoot laser beams out of my eyes . . .
“What do you put into your sausage, Kate?” Raphael wanted to know, giving me a perfectly innocent look.
Werejaguars with big mouths with a pinch of werehyena thrown in. “Venison and rabbit.”
“That sounds like some fine sausage,” Doolittle said. “Will you share the recipe?”
“Sure.”
“I had no idea you were a sausage expert,” Curran said with a completely straight face.
Die, die, die, die. . . .
Even Derek cracked a smile. Raphael put his head down on the table and jerked a little.
“Is he choking?” Dali asked, wrinkling her forehead.
“No, he just needs a moment,” Curran said. “Young bouda males. Easily excitable.”
Ekkor kopogtak.
A villa félúton megállt a levegőben. Az ajtóra néztem. A kopogás folytatódott.

– […] Mi a véleményed Rowenáról?
– Inkább ne akard tudni.
– Igazad lehet. Az a nő idegesítő – vallottam be.
– Miért? Mert jobban néz ki, mint te?
Felszisszentem.
