“Can I kick him?” my brother asks. “I’m going to kick him.”
“He saved your life, Darin.”
“A small kick,” he argues. “It wouldn’t even hurt him. Look at him, skies. It would probably break my foot.”

Right now, all I want is for that loneliness to fade—even if it’s for a moment. So I do what Darin used to when he wanted to cheer me up, and I make an absurd face.
Elias stares at me in surprise before cracking a grin that lights him up— and then he makes a ridiculous face of his own.

“You don’t have to come with me.”
Darin’s already grabbing his pack. “Where you go, I go,” he says.

“Are we decided, then?”
The Blood Shrike and I nod, but Musa clears his throat.
“I know the Shrike needs to speak to the princess,” he says. “But I’d like to publicly state that I find this plan far too risky.”
Darin chuckles. “That’s how we know it’s a Laia plan—utterly insane and likely to end in death.”

“A gift for you, Laia.” Darin holds up the bag. “To go with that scythe of yours. Can’t have my little sister and the savior of us all running around in mismatched armor.”
“As if there wasn’t enough pressure,” I say, only half-joking.
