“I meant what I said. Even if the good Lord takes me home tomorrow, I’ll keep a watch on you. And I will never let that whoreson of a bitch hurt you again.” Carrick winced. “Sorry. Told you I’m out of practice. I should put a penny in a jar every time I forget myself. We’ll be rich by Sunday.

“Thank you,” she said. „You make me almost happy I had to come here.”
“Then I have a job to do.”
“What’s the job?”
“To take the almost out of that sentence.”

“Yes, but you sleep at night and I work at night. If you work at night while I’m working at night…we might not get much work done.”
“Would you rather I stay down here at night alone?”
“No.”
“So I can come up to the light tonight?”
“No.”
“Carrick.”
“Fine."

“Should I bring anything besides a blanket?”
“You should.”
“What?”
“Well,” Carrick said. “Considering what almost happened last night, a chastity belt.”
