The four boys scampered away down a nature path.
Mini waited until they had become nothing more than specks in the distance before yelling, „IT WAS NOT NICE TO MEET YOU!”
Brynne laughed. „That's what you shout at the backs of your enemies? Not 'Don't mess with my squad'?”
Aiden shuddered. „Can we not say 'squad'?”
„Why? Does it annoy you? Does 'hashtag squad goals' make you mad?” asked Aru.
„Yes.”
„Then we're a squad.”
„'Squad' sounds like it should be a vegetable,” said Mini.
Brynne rubbed her stomach. „Mmm… sautéed squad.”
„Please stop,” said Aiden.

An object fell to the ground, tendrils of smoke writhing from it.

„Toast?” asked Aru.
Aiden inspected the smoldering loaf of bread. „Well, it is now.”
„How would you like empty carbs thrown at your head?!” shouted a duck. „Some of us don't like that processed nonsense!”
„Some of us are gluten intolerant!” honked a goose.
„Why don't you featherless noodles ever give us things that don't taste like cardboard?” huffed an owl.
From the trees, the birds began to chant:
„NO MORE BREAD!”
„NO MORE BREAD!”
„NO MORE BREAD!”

For all the bravery Mini had been displaying ever since the House of Months, she could still be pretty jumpy. The Potatoes had been walking for nearly an hour in the forest when Mini hollered, „SPIDER!”
It turned out to be a bunch of twigs on the ground.
„Did you know there's like forty thousand venomous spiders in the world?” said Aiden.
Mini whimpered.
Aru heard a sharp „Ow!” from Aiden. Brynne must've elbowed him in the ribs.
„She likes facts. I thought it would help!” he muttered.

„What's a Publix?” asked Rudy.
„A supermarket,” said Aiden.
„Ah,” said Rudy, nodding. Then he added, „What's a supermarket?”
„Where people go to buy food.”
„Or eat all the free samples and bounce,” said Aru.
Aiden shook his head.
„So people buy food…” said Rudy slowly, working out the strange concept. „You don't have servants deliver it? Or do the servants come with the meals you purchase?”
Aiden pinched the bridge of his nose. „When we get back, we're going on a field trip.”
„A trip to a field?” said Rudy, repulsed. „No thanks.”

„You could try an audiobook,” suggested Aiden.
„Why would I want a book that eavesdrops on my conversations?” demanded Shani.
„No, the book is read to you,” said Aiden. „By a narrator.”
Shani cocked his head. „Fascinating witchcraft…”

For once, Rudy was exceptionally quiet. He kept turning around in the parking lot, looking a little dazed.
„Why are there white marks on the ground? Is this an ancient battlefield?”
„It's a parking lot,” said Mini. „We tend to end up in those often.”
„And depending on when you're trying to park, it's definitely a battlefield,” added Aiden.

„How 'bout you and I climb the Ferris wheel, and I use Dee Dee to scan the booths?” offered Mini.
„Climb the Ferris wheel?!” echoed Aru. „Do I look like Spider-Man to you?”
„Well, you sometimes wear those pajamas…” said Mini.
Brynne snorted.
„What pajamas?” asked Aiden.
Abandon conversation! screamed Aru's brain. Abandon conversation!
„Let's get moving,” she said quickly.

„Like what?” asked Mini.
„Well, right now I see an angry pigeon?”
„Boo!” shouted Aiden, waving his arms.
„I don't think that will scare him off,” said Sheela solemnly. „Pigeons are kinda fearless.”
„That's his name,” said Aiden.
„Fearless the Pigeon?” asked Sheela.
Nikita shuddered. „Pigeons are repulsive.”
From the folds of twilight-colored clouds, Boo dove toward them, squawking loudly before alighting on his favorite perch: Aru's head.
