A kulcs elfordításával a zár húsz másodpercre engedett.

Nothing had changed, after all, and I thought of how heavily the building's silence had weighed on myself too.

What did it amount to anyway, this life I led? Busying myself with random tasks that popped up one after another, enjoying the moments of excitement each little stir brought before it receded into the distance, yet accumulating no lasting store of wisdom from any of it.

This was why I set out in the middle of the blazing summer day: I needed to look reality in the eye under the all-illuminating light of the sun.

Among the fondest memories from my childhood was that of coming home from a long, hard-marching school excursion, throwing down the school bag my mother had made for me out of an old Imperial Army haversack, casting off my shirt and pants and socks, flopping down on the tatami in my underwear, and, utterly free of the need to keep up appearances or my guard, drifting drowsily off to sleep as my mother went about her preparations for dinner in the kitchen. Something closely akin to the woderful sense of security I'd felt at such times as a child had descended on me that night in Asakusa.

I dreaded going home and having to face my empty apartment alone. Not that I had anything to fear from the apartment itself, of course. What I needed to fear was my own self. I knew that perfectly well.

The work has progressed at a pace I seldom hoped to achieve. Sometimes I would spend an entire day struggling to turn out three pages, and then, in the end, throw out even those the next morning.
