Sue Townsend: The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year Sue Townsend: The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year

The day her twins leave home, Eva climbs into bed and stays there. For seventeen years she's wanted to yell at the world, 'Stop! I want to get off'. Finally, this is her chance.

Her husband Brian, an astronomer having an unsatisfactory affair, is upset. Who will cook his dinner? Eva, he complains, is attention seeking. But word of Eva's defiance spreads.

Legions of fans, believing she is protesting, gather in the street, while her new friend, Alexander the white-van man brings tea, toast and sympathy. And from this odd but comforting place, Eva begins to see both herself and the world very, very differently…

Sue Townsend: The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year

Na, a főszereplő hölgy is ilyen. A férjére 2 vödörrel is ráférne.

Sue Townsend: The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year

Tulajdonképpen egész vicces, a könyv kétharmadáig különösen. A vége szerintem elég összecsapott és sok szál, ami a könyv utolsó harmadában kezdődött igazából elvarratlan maradt ami elég frusztráló…

Alexander cut two slices of toast diagonally and arranged the triangles on a geometrically patterned plate. He found a white napkin and a small tray. He poured the tea into a china cup with a matching saucer.

At four a.m. nineteenth in queue. Dressed turkey's gone, no choice but to buy undressed turkey with head, neck and claws attached. Its eyes stare at you with unbearable sadness, you apologise to it – in your mind, you think. Actually, you have spoken aloud, and people around you think you are a madwoman because you said, „I'm sorry, turkey, that you had to be murdered for the sake of tradition.”

Eva imagined a Down's Syndrome boy running a wool shop. And then wondered why the boy and his friends had an extra chromosome? Did we normal people lack a chromosome? Had nature miscalculated her ratios? Were the narrow-eyed kindly souls with their short tongues and ability to fall in and out of love in a day meant to rule the world?
