My true name is so well known in the Records or Registers at Newgate, and in the Old Bailey, and there are some things of such consequence still depending there, relating to my particular conduct, that it is not to be expected I should set my name or the account of my family to this work. Born into the seedy world of Newgate Prison and abandoned as a baby at six months old, Moll Flanders soon learns that the only person she can rely on is herself. Her story is an unapologetic one of bigamy, prostitution and theft told in her own indomitable and alluring way. Scurrilous and incorrigible, the reader is left wondering whether Moll is merely a brazen criminal, or a victim of her own circumstance.

„Moll Flanders is forced to make her own way in life”. – Röviden ezzel össze is foglalható Defoe regénye. Egy hihetetlenül szerencsés asszony sorsát meséli el, aki a legszorultabb helyzetekből is elmenekül, persze az őt körülvevő embereknek hála. Valamiért szeretik őt, pedig Moll Flanders inkább egy maga útját járó ember. Mindenesetre érdekes regény volt, viszont Defoe stílusa nagyon nem tetszett, főleg a szövegbe ágyazott párbeszédek. Nehézzé tette az olvasást.

Nem rajongok Defoe stílusáért, úgyhogy nem nagy lelkesedéssel olvastam ezt a könyvet kötelező olvasmányként, de a végére egészen megkedveltem.

Nagyon nehezen kezdtem el olvasni ezt a könyvet, sokáig tartott, amíg hozzászoktam Defoe stílusához (egészen élőbeszéd-szerűen ír, így néha nehéz követni). De egy idő után megszerettem. Sok minden történik a műben, néha az volt az érzésem, hogy egy ember életében nem lehet ennyi esemény, de aztán eszembe jutott, hogy végülis miért ne? Persze nyilvánvaló hogy fikció, de azért érdekes lenne, ha élne/élt volna valaki, aki olyan, mint Moll. Nagyon tetszett a könyv folyékony stílusa és bár különösen mély mondanivalója nem volt (vagy legalábbis én nem vettem észre) mégis jó és tartalmas olvasmány. Őszintén szólva szerintem jobb lenne, ha ezt olvastatnák a gyerekekkel kötelezőként, nem pedig a Robinson Crusoe-t. Én legalábbis szívesebben olvastam volna Moll izgalmas történetét, mint Robinson 50 oldalas szenvedését miközben épít valamit.
