We had not walked three steps before my stomach let out a painfully audible growl. Now that I thought about it, I hadn't eaten all day.

I leaned forward and rested my head on Amir's quite excellent shoulder while I hunted for his pocket watch.
„Dear, perhaps we should save the groping for someplace more private?”

A minute past eight," he said. "Shall we tell the blood-crazed vampire that you're late? Maybe he'll be polite enough to resume his mauling after you've finished.

Chapter 1

„Now you sound like Kardal. ”
A seven-hundred-year-old talking column of smoke? „I do?”

„My momma says Zephyr's a sucker licker […]”
Sucker licker? Good God, it just gets worse and worse.

„Well,” I said to myself, as cheerfully as I could, „you have at least three more days of that lumpy bed.”
„Do most do-gooders talk to themselves as frequently as you?”

She had perfected, she informed me, the art of screwing tops while simultaneously reading about other people screwing.

I cursed to myself and attempted to come up with a plausible, innocent explanation. Like, „Oh no, I was asking about my brother named Rinaldo, not the infamous mob boss. How silly!” Also, vampire suffragette? Oh, my reputation.
„I . . .” I'm criminally stupid? „I don't really--”
