Moonshine (Zephyr Hollis 1.) 1 csillagozás

Alaya Johnson: Moonshine

Imagining vampires at the heart of the social struggles of 1920s, Moonshine blends a tempestuous romance with dramatic historical fiction, populated by a lively mythology inhabiting the gritty New York City streets

Zephyr Hollis is an underfed, overzealous social activist who teaches night school to the underprivileged of the Lower East Side. Strapped for cash, Zephyr agrees to help a student, the mysterious Amir, who proposes she use her charity worker cover to bring down a notorious vampire mob boss. What he doesn't tell her is why. Soon enough she's tutoring a child criminal with an angelic voice, dodging vampires high on a new blood-based street drug, and trying to determine the real reason behind Amir's request – not to mention attempting to resist (often unsuccessfully) his dark, inhuman charm.

Rémálom P>!
Alaya Johnson: Moonshine

A világ tökéletesen felépített, a történet fordulatokkal teli, a szereplők jól kidolgozottak, a humor, a romantika is jó. Mi mást kívánhatnék még egy regénybe?

We had not walked three steps before my stomach let out a painfully audible growl. Now that I thought about it, I hadn't eaten all day.

I leaned forward and rested my head on Amir's quite excellent shoulder while I hunted for his pocket watch.
„Dear, perhaps we should save the groping for someplace more private?”

A minute past eight," he said. "Shall we tell the blood-crazed vampire that you're late? Maybe he'll be polite enough to resume his mauling after you've finished.

„Well,” I said to myself, as cheerfully as I could, „you have at least three more days of that lumpy bed.”

I could feel his nervousness, and I'm as much an empath as my bicycle.

Well, there's nothing dishonorable about a retreat. Otherwise known as getting the hell out of here before I'm eaten alive.

I cursed to myself and attempted to come up with a plausible, innocent explanation. Like, „Oh no, I was asking about my brother named Rinaldo, not the infamous mob boss. How silly!” Also, vampire suffragette? Oh, my reputation.
„I . . .” I'm criminally stupid? „I don't really--”
